Night view from Caló des Moro in Mallorca with the Orion constellation over the sea and rocky formations in the foreground

Orion over Caló des Moro

If you've been to Caló des Moro, you already know. If you haven’t, let me tell you.

In summer it’s something else entirely — the beach on every list, in every phone photo from someone who passed through for a day. In January, with the cold pressed against the rock and the sea completely still, it’s a place almost no one sees. That night, it was ours.

There were three of us. No plan. We just wanted to see where the night would take us.

When Orion started climbing above the water, I looked down at the screen. And there it was: the red of hydrogen, the nebula burning over the Mediterranean. Maybe you would have missed it. I couldn’t.

There are nights you don’t plan and don’t forget. This is one of mine. Now it can be one of yours.
